Beautiful pair of abat jour lamps with a diffuser with an organic “cocoon” shape, crushed with a marbled motif in Cocoon membrane and a wooden base, from the “Cocoon” series by Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni made for Flos / Licht Studio, in Italy, in the 1960s 60s. The conditions of the lamps are excellent in relation to the time and well described in the photos: working; lampshades with very slight signs of age; wooden bases, most likely cherry, without any defects; original electrical components of the time. These rare bedside lamps, very decorative, provide a warm, diffused and atmospheric light: real luminous sculptures and beautiful iconic furnishing object of the 60s/70s suitable for any type of environment. The polymer sprayed like a cobweb created a durable yet flexible membrane that was waterproof and resistant to corrosion, dust, oil, gas and even liquids such as citric acid, alcohol and bleach. Eisenkeil presented these first prototypes at the Milan Fair in 1959. The entrepreneur and architect Dino Gavina was immediately enthusiastic and immediately understood the enormous design potential of this material and A. Eisenkeil therefore invited Dino Gavina, Tobia Scarpa, Pier Giacomo and Achille Castiglioni in Merano for a few months, to create a series of lights with the Cocoon material to be included in the production of the Lichtstudio… From that experience and from those designers, the company FLOS was born. Le condizioni delle lampade sono ottime in relazione al tempo e ben descritte in foto: funzionanti; paralumi con lievissimi segni del tempo; basi in legno, molto probabilmente ciliegio, senza alcun difetto; componenti elettriche originali dell’epoca. Questa rare lampade da comodino, molto decorative, forniscono una luce calda, diffusa e d’atmosfera: vere e propria sculture luminose e bellissimi oggetto d’arredo iconico degli anni’60/’70 adatte ad ogni tipo di ambiente. Negli anni’60 gli esperimenti del designer George Nelson basati su strutture a telaio di metallo per lampadari ispirarono Artur Eisenkeil, un piccolo produttore di Merano e fondatore dell’azienda LichtStudio Eisenkeil, nella creazione dei primi prototipi di paralumi Cocoon, nei quali il telaio in filo d’acciaio bianco / gommato veniva prima modellato e poi spruzzato con il Cocoon, una plastica polimerica filata rinforzata con fibre di vetro, molto resistente e proveniente dagli Stati Uniti dove era stata inventata per motivi bellici. Il polimero spruzzato come un filo di ragnatela creava una membrana durevole ma flessibile, a tenuta d’acqua e resistente alla corrosione, alla polvere, all’olio, al gas e perfino a liquidi come l’acido citrico, l’alcol e la candeggina. Eisenkeil presentò questi primi prototipi alla Fiera di Milano nel 1959. This is a rare orange tole metal floor lamp with gold trim. It is in good overall condition with some minor wear, including some small bends/dings to the tray and to the shade. There is light surface wear as well. It is missing one of the screws that holds the white shade in place (doesn’t affect the functionality). Lamp works just fine. Pottery is in great condition. Burlap backing on Masonite is fine. There is a paint smug on the right edge of burlap, but you will notice it is the same color of the glaze on the rooster, so suspect it happened when the piece was created and not damage. Frame has a little scuffing on the edge here and there, but suspect some Old English Scratch Remover should take care of that for you. No, not a company representative, just know it works… Totally Original piece in Great Condition.. See photos and description. The frame measures 19 3/4″ high x 21 1/2″ wide, rooster measures approx. 13 3/4″ high x 14 1/4″ wide. And the total depth of frame and pottery is approx. 1 or slightly more. This is an important and RARE Vintage Mid Century Modern EERO AARNIO Ball Chair, approximately dating to the 1970’s. This chair is unmarked and has clear signs of age throughout. It is NOT new or a Chinese reproduction. Approximately 47.25 inches tall x 43.31 inches wide x 38.19 inches in depth. Acquired from a small private sale at a deceased estate in Hollywood, California. Good condition for age, with light staining to the fabric, some moderate sun-fading to the cushions and interior, and some sagging to the interior lining in the upper left corner please see photos. There is mild scuffing, scratches and paint loss to the shell and base of the chair. If you look at the bottom of the base, you can see that the fiberglass has yellowed from being decades old. I have only seen this on authentic 1970’s era Eero Aarnio Ball chairs. This is a real vintage piece at half the price of a brand-new reproduction on 1stdibs.
