Experience a stunning piece of mid-century art glass history with this vintage L. Smith 21-inch “Lilac” swung vase. Produced for one year only in 1961, this vase is exceptionally rare and highly sought after by collectors?? . Smith Glass Company (an American glassmaker founded in 1907?) introduced the Lilac color as a follow-up to their successful Bittersweet line in 1960? . The result was a gorgeous pale lavender-purple glass lightly swirled with milky white, giving it a unique slag glass appearance? . In certain areas – especially around the rim – the purple tone deepens to a rich amethyst, creating beautiful contrasting swirls of light and dark purple throughout the vase. This particular example is the paneled variant (pattern #0202) of the swung vase, featuring twelve smooth vertical panels around its body? . Its form flaunts curvy “hips” rising from a slender base and an asymmetrical, free-formed rim that was created by literally “swung” glass techniques in the factory. Standing at an impressive 21 inches tall, it commands attention as a statement floor vase or centerpiece. The opaque lilac color is consistent through the main body, with whispery white and violet streaks that highlight the paneled texture and emphasize the vase’s Mid-Century Modern (MCM) charm.
