Rare 1st Gen. Womb Chair & Ottoman by Saarinen for Knoll Early circa 1948
Womb Chair & Ottoman 1st Generation KNOLL. This rare first generation Model 70 Chair and matching ottoman (VERY RARE to find both together from this period) more commonly known as the Womb Chair, by Eero Saarinen for Knoll Associates. Confirmed by the un-afixed label (which will be included) with the early 36-30 Steinway St Long Island City 1, N. Address (see pics) which predates the use of zip codes. The frame and feet match Knoll’s example for the 1948 first year productions for the iconic Womb Chair, and the matched label further supports this. This lounge chair and ottoman are being offered as as set for either a collector’s piece to keep and hold as-is with its current original hopsack (very Cato-esque) textile (I believe wool) or alternatively this could be a designer’s reupholstery project for the client who wishes to have the best of the best. I personally would look into having the fabric cleaned and repaired as a great deal of the fabric is still in amazing condition and it is so incredibly beautiful. The fabric shows signs of use and wear with a few tears and pulling, and the foam has hardened and is disintegrating. If regular use is intended, reupholstery with new foam and fabric (or leather) is advised. Additionally there is a small crack in one of the legs (see last pic) near the where the screw hole is. The Ottoman has some bent plywood delimitation (see 2nd to last pic) about 1.5-2 inches wide on both sides of the ottoman, which again is a minor repair if you were to choose to reupholster the piece. Please understand that everything on both the chair and ottoman are original and untouched. These 1st generation Womb chairs were made quite differently than modern production Womb Chais (bent plywood AND fiberglass) and as such it has a weight and presence that the new ones don’t have. Florence Knoll requested that Eero Saarinen design a chair like a basket full of pillows, the result was the groundbreaking Womb armchair. This iconic piece would be a great addition as part of a classic or contemporary living room, den, man or woman! Cave, family room, office or bedroom. It would also be an apt choice in a corporate, retail or hospitality location such as a boutique hotel lobby, cocktail bar, members club, workspace studio, executive office or in a luxe clothing emporium. Vtg Pair Steelcase Chairs Mid Century Modern Rare Orange/red/ yellow-ish Knoll Pollock style. The fabric is rare you dont see this very often. Got from Palm Beach, FL estate. Brought back up with me to Mississippi. The chairs are in very good condition. These chairs were made in 1977. If you want to visit my store… Then just go to the ring category. It might be less overwhelming for you as i have quite a lot up for sale. Note: findings such as clasps on bolos etc will never be sterling as it is not strong enough to take the tensile strength. I use JSP to test the metal. I always do my best to describe and/or photograph all noticeable flaws. I leave sterling in as is shape for the customer to decide whether to clean. Note that vintage items are just that, vintage. So this item was previously’loved on,’ and may have some expected minor imperfections due to general wear. But if there were any noteable condition issues (flaws etc) outside the norm, it would otherwise be stated here whether verbally or by photo. Please note: Please note: most of my items are returnable but this would be at your cost. This item is in the category “Antiques\Furniture\Other Antique Furniture”. Wire binding with decorated thick metallic silver wrappers. 160 black and white illustrations and 123 schematic diagrams. Colour-coded sections in blue, red and yellow. Chairs: featuring designs by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen, Franco Albini, Bonet Kurchan and Jorge Ferrari-Hardoy, Pierre Jeanneret, Donald Knorr, Odelberg Olsen, Florence Knoll, Joseph Frank, Andre Dupre, George Nakashima, Ilmari Tapiovaara, and Elias Svedberg. Tables: Hans Bellman, George Nakashima, Florence Knoll, Abel Sorenson, and Franziska Porges Hosken. Chests, Cabinets, Beds: Florence Knoll, Charles Niedringhaus and Richard Stein. Desks, Offices: Florence Knoll, Knoll Planning Unit. Lamps: Isamu Noguchi and Clay Michie. Textiles: Stig Lindberg, Angelo Testa, Eszter Haraszty, Ulrike Rhomberg among others. Architecture and interiors: Philip Johnson, Marcel Breuer and Florence Knoll and the Knoll Planning Unit. All product descriptions include dimensions. The catalogue is complete. The wrappers are a little worn with some creasing and inevitable light bumping to the corners. Internally the pages are vibrant and clean although at some point the catalogue must have been stored in damp conditions as there is rippling to the pages and some colour bleed through throughout. I have highlighted this in the multiple photographs provided. Please study them closely. In my opinion the faults are not too disturbing and do not detract significantly from what is a truly scarce and much sought after twentieth century design artefact. This has been in my collection for several years and is a somewhat reluctant sale. An opportunity to acquire truly spectacular document of mid-century twentieth century design. Featuring the most wonderful, ingenious colour coded schematic design by Matter, exemplary product photography and the highest production values. Beyond saying that, I will let the pictures speak for themselves. There are many more items in my shop that don’t appear in regular item searches. UK buyers only may also pay by cheque or postal order. If it’s a cheque, please allow 7 to 10 days for it to clear. It’s hard enough to make ends meet on here as it is! Thank you for your understanding. Please note that, unless clearly stated otherwise, my listings are for vintage/antique items and therefore, by definition, are not going to be in the same condition you would expect from a brand new item. Please be assured that I always endeavour to offer the most accurate description possible of the item’s condition and take multiple illustrative photographs. Rare Jens Risom Sofa Velvet Mohair & Steel Frame Mid century Modern Knoll
Please check out my other items for sale! Vintage 1960’s Jens Risom aluminum group armless sofa. This rarely seen aluminum framed sofa is absolutely stunning. Reupholstered a few years ago in exquisite Grey Knoll Velvet (Mohair). Minimal flourishes include an aluminum back bar, and a nine button seat back. Note seat imperfections hence the low price. This sofa is the most comfortable armless sofa you’ll ever sit on. It measures 6’6″L x 32″ T x 31″D, with a seat of 15 1/2″ at it’s highest point. The foam and suspension are excellent. The frame is very nice and would polish up even nicer (we like the patina). The velvet fabric is the most forgiving upholstery we’ve ever seen. It hides almost all of the minor scuffs and scrapes from use. Teflon glides pictured were just temporary. There is one, very small (like less than 1/8 round) hole that does not go all the way through the fabric, located on the front of the seat of the sofa, left side (facing the sofa). Only noticeable if you are looking for it. It cannot be seen in any of the photos. Overall, excellent vintage condition. The item “Rare Jens Risom Sofa Velvet Mohair & Steel Frame Mid century Modern Knoll” is in sale since Sunday, May 10, 2020.
