Womb Chair & Ottoman 1st Generation KNOLL. This rare first generation Model 70 Chair and matching ottoman (VERY RARE to find both together from this period) more commonly known as the Womb Chair, by Eero Saarinen for Knoll Associates. Confirmed by the un-afixed label (which will be included) with the early 36-30 Steinway St Long Island City 1, N. Address (see pics) which predates the use of zip codes. The frame and feet match Knoll’s example for the 1948 first year productions for the iconic Womb Chair, and the matched label further supports this. This lounge chair and ottoman are being offered as as set for either a collector’s piece to keep and hold as-is with its current original hopsack (very Cato-esque) textile (I believe wool) or alternatively this could be a designer’s reupholstery project for the client who wishes to have the best of the best. I personally would look into having the fabric cleaned and repaired as a great deal of the fabric is still in amazing condition and it is so incredibly beautiful. The fabric shows signs of use and wear with a few tears and pulling, and the foam has hardened and is disintegrating. If regular use is intended, reupholstery with new foam and fabric (or leather) is advised. Additionally there is a small crack in one of the legs (see last pic) near the where the screw hole is. The Ottoman has some bent plywood delimitation (see 2nd to last pic) about 1.5-2 inches wide on both sides of the ottoman, which again is a minor repair if you were to choose to reupholster the piece. Please understand that everything on both the chair and ottoman are original and untouched. These 1st generation Womb chairs were made quite differently than modern production Womb Chais (bent plywood AND fiberglass) and as such it has a weight and presence that the new ones don’t have. Florence Knoll requested that Eero Saarinen design a chair like a basket full of pillows, the result was the groundbreaking Womb armchair. This iconic piece would be a great addition as part of a classic or contemporary living room, den, man or woman! Cave, family room, office or bedroom. It would also be an apt choice in a corporate, retail or hospitality location such as a boutique hotel lobby, cocktail bar, members club, workspace studio, executive office or in a luxe clothing emporium. Original Knoll Tulip Chair by Eero Saarinen. In the hard to find Yellow. Here is an original Tulip Chair by Eero Saarinen, made by Knoll. It retains the original tags. It has the original yellow upholstery and the original unrestored finish. There is some light staining on the upholstery but for being yellow its a true survivor. The base is tight like it should be – no wobble. The fiberglass is excellent condition – no cracks or chips. Light marks on the shell and base. VINTAGE 1970’s TULIP DINING SET DESIGNED BY ARTHUR UMANOFF FOR CONTEMPORARY SHELLS, BUT OBVIOUSLY “BORROWED” FROM THE SAARINEN TULIP DESIGNS FOR KNOLL. THESE ARE RARE AND VERY HARD TO FIND COMPLETE. SET IS SOLID AND STURDY WITH NO STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. SHOWS LOTS OF WEAR AND PATINA. WOULD BENEFIT FROM A NEW PAINT JOB AND A REFURBISHED TOP, BUT COULD BE USED AS IS WITH IT’S RIGHTEOUS WEAR HANGING OUT THERE. Vintage Set of 4 Knoll Eero Saarinen Tullip Armrest Chairs with tulip table that is 48″ in diameter and 28″ tall. Chairs have cushions that I believe are original, seat cushion is 18″ from ground, is 26″ wide at widest point (edge of armrests), and seat back is 30 tall. I don’t believe table is a Knoll, but the captain chairs are and all are marked with the Knoll sticker on the base. One chair is loose where the base meets the fiberglass seat and will need some work. There is a nick in side of fiberglass side (see photos) of chair and the finish is peeling on some chairs. This would make a nice refinish project for someone that has fiberglass and painting skills. RARE PIPSAN SAARINEN DAUGHTER OF EERO SAARINEN, VERY HEAVY FORGED WROUGHT IRON HAIRPIN LEGS AND CORNER PIECES. MADE FOR THE FICKS REED CO ONLY IN 1949 AND 1950. HERE’S A PARTIAL LISTING FROM 1ST DIBS ON THE TABLE, EXCELLENT PICTURES TO COMPARE. THIS TABLE FEATURED ON 1ST DIBS IS THE SMALLER END TABLE, MY TABLE IS A LARGE DINING TABLE AND COOL LOW BENCH OR COFFEE TABLE. HERE’S A 1950’S ADVERTISEMENT FROM FICKS REED THAT SHOWS THE SOL-AIR TABLES AND BENCH LINE. These are among several pieces called “SOL – AIR”. Very few examples survive. The “Sol – Air” line is pictured in major design references including George Nelson’s “Chairs” (1952). THE LEGS ARE WELDED TOGETHER INTO 2 SETS FOR EACH PIECE. I CAN SPLIT THE SET TOO. THE TABLE IS BIG ENOUGH TO USE AS A DINING TABLE. THE BENCH MEASURES 4 FEET LONG AND 18″ WIDE AND 18.5″ TALL. THE WOOD IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION, AS YOU CAN SEE IT HAS BEEN PAINTED WHITE THROUGH THE YEARS. THE VARNISH THOUGH LOOKS TO STILL BE ON THE PLAIN WOOD STILL. I LOVED THE LOOK LIKE THIS AND LEFT THEM LIKE THEY ARE. VERY RARE TO HAVE THE SET. THESE ARE GOING FOR GOOD PRICES ON THE VARIOUS MID CENTURY MOD WEBSITES.
