For whom Thurston designed many, many fabulous lamps for decades… The shade, per our research, is really rare, which is no surprise as it’s over 60 years old, glass and fairly thin, so the survival rate on these was not high. The base, which is a weighted and painted solid metal, sits very stably and evenly on any surface, and secures the walnut stem well. The design is very recognizable as a Thurston design, who seemed to love these architectural shapes and looks, using natural woods and metals such as brass and steel to accent the shapes and create interest in something as basic as a lamp. The large top ring, for example adds a flair to this simple walnut stem, and the arm, which is fixed, adds dimension and space to the lamp. The globe, with its interesting shade, very’Danish Modern’ in looks, further creates interest and style to this very cool piece. The lamp in this listing has the original shade, the top ring, and everything else original, which seems to be elusive to find on the market these days all in one lamp. Lucky the new owner to get all this in one lamp, and enjoy great lighting in his/her home, too! MEASURES: 25 inches from the top of the globe to the bottom, base is 8.25 inches diameter, the globe is 11.75 inches tall, and its diameter is 3.75 inches. We feel sure the globe, as well as the lamp itself, were American made, in the 1950’s. It’s stunning in its height and design, and in great condition. We replaced the on/off knob that was missing, and that was the only thing replaced. The globe is in remarkable shape, with only very minor, typical of age, use/storage rim chips whch could be filed off by a glass restorer if desired. Some very minor surface wear on the base, which is coated with a fiber underneath so that the metal doesn’t scratch a table surface and was factory applied. A truly wonderful, very cool and stunning lamp to have in any room, and one that is so classic and yet so Mid Century Modern in its appeal. This is the lamp your friends are going to be really jealous that they did not find it first, and the lamp you will love having in years to come in your home.
