Original Vintage Mid-Century Modern 1962 Austin Enterprises Aluminum Chess Set. These sets were made by Austin Enterprises from extruded aluminum as gifts for executives at Alcoa aluminum. Even back in 1962 it was recognized that this set was so singular in its design that it was considered more of an art piece rather than a game, and as such the box is made to be mounted on the wall. Some refer to this as the holy Grail of chess sets. The box has minor damage as indicated in the photograph. A small piece of the support for the very last piece has broken. Incredible hammered brass board. The largest piece is 6. The board is approximately 20. All 32 pieces present. The theme is Greek Mythology. The pieces appear to be lost wax bronze but NOT CONFIRMED. Very rare and more research needed. This is NOT like the copies available online. These are larger in scale and much higher quality. We just opened our first studio in Irvington, NY. Mid Century Modernist Chess Set. This gorgeous and unique chess set is very rare. This beautiful set is made from what I believe to be brass and steel. The tops of the rooks, bishops, knights, king, and queen screw into the bases of the pieces. Hey are quite heavy with the kings and queens weighing in around 2.5 oz. The kings are just shy of 2 in height. The pieces are displayed on 1.5 squares, which I think makes a perfect pair (board for display only and not included). After exhaustive research I’ve been able to find out little else about this set, but it’s a piece of art and a delight to behold. Also, be sure to check out my other chess listings! Workshop Carl AUBOCK CHESS SET HORN Brass and Leather Vienna Austria. Ultra-rare Carl AUBOCK Chess Set! The objects came all from one collection and have been acquired directly from the workshop in the period 1960-70. All objects are in very good condition. As the objects have been intended as a collection from the beginning, the preowner got them directly from the workshop and carefully selected only objects with a very special / beautiful pattern of the horn. This offer is for an original Auböck chess set. The design dates back to the 1950s. The Auböck horn objects are all unmarked, as the material did not allow it. 100% original Carl Auböck and vintage. The material is natural horn, nickel plated brass (figures); leather (board) and wood (tray). The figures are all in pristine condition, made from dark and bright horn and nickel plated brass. They are heavy, the figures, together with the tray weigh about 3.4kg! The leather board is in very good condition with regular signs of use and age. Shows a nice patina with smaller scratches and stains. No cracks or similar flaws. The complete set is clean. The board measures 39x39cm (15.3×15.3). The figures measure from 42mm (pawns) to 94mm (king) in height. One inch is 25.4mm. The models from the Auböck horn collection are no longer in production. The small matchbox is shown for size comparison and not included. This offer is for the described object only, the objects from the group photos could be available in my other listings.
