Very rare painted tiles, oil paintings on tile, hard to find DeVity mid Century modern French style tiles. Beautiful pair and one of a kind set. Born in Reggio-Calbria in southern Italy. DeVity lived in Naples and later moved to Rome where he was taught by Giacomo Balla, creator of futurism. De Vity’s works have won international awards and he is recognized for his bright colors and impressionist treatment of the streets and waterways of Paris and Venice. 8.75×8.75 framed tile (Pair is same size), actual tile is aprox. MEDIUM: PAIR of painted tiles, oil on tile (one tile is’Boizenburg, Made in Germany’ and other is’KERVIT, Made in Italy’). CONDITION: A paint fleck can be seen on the doorway of one of the tiles, chipped off (see photos). Otherwise as found vintage condition. Frames are original period to the tiles and have some edge wear. Overall good condition but may need light restoration on one of the tiles. Detailed Description & Subject Matter. This striking piece is a masterclass in Mid-Century Modern industrial abstraction. The composition utilizes a sophisticated panoramic format to tell a story of movement and machinery. The Subject: The painting features a series of layered, “ghosted” circular forms that evoke heavy industrial gears, locomotive wheels, or the intricate clockwork of a master jeweler-a direct nod to Ball’s background in metalsmithing. Color & Composition: Vibrant washes of ochre yellow and deep crimson are anchored by a heavy, atmospheric vertical blue wash on the right, suggesting a rain-swept urban dock or a bustling train station. Technique: Painted on “cloth-paper” (a heavy, textile-based cotton rag), the surface bears the beautiful, wavy texture (“cockling”) of a true wet-media original. Condition Note: This vintage piece shows authentic “foxing” (natural age spots on the paper), confirming its mid-20th-century origin. Galleons of the sea. It’s a beautiful painting my grandmother gave me it is an original painting by Van Gaard studio and is signed on the bottom. A very large painting perfect for large rooms it’s 54 inches horizontal and about 30 inches vertical. Richly colored in shades of orange, gold, and black. Signed Van Gaard in the lower corner. Van Guard Studios was owned and operated by artist Lee Reynolds Burr. Vanguard produced “original” paintings by in-house artists which were signed Van Gaard, Stuart, or Reynolds. Artists at Vanguard Studios duplicated original paintings. Backgrounds were painted in acrylic and then line-work was silk-screened from the master copy. Details were then added to the screened lines to create a raised effect. The finished product was then sprayed with an oil sealer, creating an “original” oil painting. This is a very large, framed painting that measures approximately 54″ wide x 30″ tall (including the frame). Colors are bright and vibrant.
