Rare 1949 1st Gen RAR Eames Herman Miller Zenith Rope Edge Rocking Shell Chair. First year chair with ultra-rare base which was discontinued early in the first year production. The low front bars which crossed to the back caused a hazard and people were getting their heels caught in the them. This chair has the original structural and aesthetic design envisioned by the Eames’ and few exist today. One birch runner has had both the front and back tips re-glued at some time in the past {please see image #11 & #12} but are stable. Oversized puck mounts are good and stable. Steel base has one mounting flange weld separated from base frame {please see image #17}, otherwise good. Shell is good with no chips or cracks and minor wear/discoloration consistent with age/use. Wanted to sell in original found condition. Please pay within 3 days of closed listing. Local pickups required to present valid ID & Bill of Sale signature. All sales are final. Fantastic early and rare lounge chairs from an old cape cod estate. One retains a good amount of the original Thayer Coggin label, the other has just a trace. The frames are in nice solid condition with incredible sculptural arms. On arm has a small cluster of pockmarks as shown. That same chair has had the corners of the seat support rounded off. Cushions should cover this up for the most part. The other chair still has the square corners, but some bite marks. Beautiful chairs reminiscent of a Finn Juhl design. The chair features lighter grey industrial grade paint than its 1960’s successor, which is a paint that Charles and Ray Eames looked endlessly for. This example has held up brilliantly and will serve well for decades to come. Height is 43 inches. Excellent condition with nice gloss to the shell. It has not been coated or refinished and is original. Original cushion can be removed and is also in very nice shape. Some wear is found, but generally condition is superb. Shock Mounts and Screws. The shock mounts are all original and are still stable on the chair. The base is in excellent shape. And I will make sure that it is as inexpensive for you as possible.
