Vintage Jack Lenor Larsen Fabric. RARE. Mid Century Modern
This 1978 textile is an original, mid-century modern, rare find by renowned textile artist, Jack Lenor Larsen. Fabric: There are 9 large square sections, 8 2/3 continuous yards. Possibly raw silk, but amateur testing did not seem to indicate it being silk. A collections fellow at the Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, MI, offered the following information on the fabric: The textile appears to be an iteration of the pattern’Skylight’. This pattern was produced in both grey/white and tan/red versions, most likely to be used for large floor pillows. The Minneapolis Institute of Art has an untrimmed example of this fabric in their collection. According to their website, their Larsen “Skylight” fabric was made in Thailand, and the mill is listed as Thai Silk on the museum’s site. Larsen work is in the permanent art collections in museums across the nation, including the MoMA. Note: There are two, very small imperfections in the textile. This is a rare mid-century Modernist Viking carved horn coasters holder in a form of a bird. It is a piece of art, decoration on the table and used as coasters. Size is about 10.5 inches long, 6.75 inches wide and 4.5 inches tall. This was made possibly in the Scandinavian countries in the 1950’s to 1960’s. Condition is mint like not used at all. This is an amazingly well done and exceptionally RARE Antique Mid Century Modern Brazilian Doberman Dog Oil Painting Portrait by famous Brazilian-Californian Mid Century painter Ozz França 1928 – 1991. França was a former Disney animation artist who’s projects included “Lady & the Tramp” and 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. He is mostly known for his Mid Century Abstract Expressionist style, portraits of Big-Eyed children and later, his ethereal Native American portraits. This is an early work by the artist, and completely unique from his usual style of subject matter. If you are collector of this artist, this is a rare jewel that is not to be missed. França was collected by many wealthy socialites and celebrities during the 1960’s, and this particular painting came from the old estate of an affluent family in the Hollywood Hills. The family were personal friends of the artist, and commissioned França to paint a photorealistic portrait of their three prized pure-bred Dobermans. This work hung over their fireplace in their living room, where they often drank and socialized with Ozz França. The painting depicts three beautiful Dobermans, with charming yet noble expressions. The dog’s names are written under each portrait, and read from left to right: Mr. Scratch, Babe & Tina. I was told that these purebred Dobermans sired many puppies, and that their descendants now number in the hundreds. Perhaps you have one of these dogs?? This would be a very cool thing! Signed “França 60″ in the upper right corner. Good condition, with some minor paint loss to one corner of the painting. This work fits loosely in the frame, and would require a few nails to securely fasten the canvas to the original 60’s frame. Approximately 29 1/4 x 35 1/4 inches including frame. Oswaldo Franca (pronounced FRON-suh) known as Ozz Franca in the art world was born 2 Oct 1928 in Sarapui, Brazil, but grew up in Sao Paulo. From an early age he showed talent as an artist. At the age of 14 he won first prize at the annual Spring Salon Art Competition in Sao Paulo. From there he went on to win prizes all over Brazil. He held his first one man show at the age of 18. He graduated from the Fine Arts School in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1949. He decided to devote his life to art. Franca arrived in the U. On 1 Sep 1952 to accept a scholarship at the University of Utah. A year later he moved to Hollywood and began doing movie illustration for Walt Disney. He was proud that he was the first Brazilian artist to work as a cartoonist with Walt Disney. Some of his projects included’Lady and the Tramp’ and’20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’. Franca painted many subjects, but he is best known for his esoteric images of Native American women. He sometimes worked from black and white photographs provided by is daughter. He would then complete the painting with a color scheme of his own choosing. He also painted many movie stars. The winner of numerous awards, including honors from the city of Los Angeles for his cultural contributions. Franca resided in a California desert community that afforded him the appreciaton and silence that allowed his creativity to flourish. Up for your consideration is a rare vintage mid century modern 37 5 pod lamp. It was painted silver years ago, some minor paint rubs in a few spots showing the brass underneath. You could repaint them a color of your choice or keep them silver. The pods are moveable both by the neck and the pod itself thus directing the light to a different location. The base and the top can come apart by a screw. All you will have to do is screw the 2 pieces together. They are 2 big to go in the same box. Any questions, please ask! Local pick-up is welcome.
