Rare Vladimir Kagan Snail Coffee table. The pioneers of modern furniture design in America in the mid-20th century all had their moments of flamboyance: Charles and Ray Eames produced the startling, biomorphic La Chaise; George Nelsons firm created the Marshmallow sofa; Edward Wormley had his decadent Listen to Me chaise. But no designer of the day steadily offered works with more verve and dynamism than Vladimir Kagan. While others, it seems, designed with suburban households in mind, Kagan aimed to suit the tastes of young, sophisticated city-dwellers. With signature designs that feature sleekly curved frames and others that have dramatic out-thrust legs, Kagan made furniture sexy. Kagans father was a Russian master cabinetmaker who took his family first to Germany (where Vladimir was born) and then to New York in 1938. After studying architecture at Columbia University, Kagan opened a design firm at age 22 and immediately made a splash with his long, low and sinuous Serpentine sofa. Furniture lines such as the Tri-symmetric group of glass-topped, three-legged tables and the vivacious Contours chairs soon followed. Kagans choices of form and materials evolved through subsequent decades, embracing lucite, aluminum and burl-wood veneers. By the late 1960s, Kagan was designing austere, asymmetrical cabinets and his Omnibus group of modular sofas and chairs. For all his aesthetic élan, Kagan said that throughout his career, his touchstone was comfort. A lot of modern furniture was not comfortable. And so comfort is: form follows function. The function was to make it comfortable, he once commented. I created what I called vessels for the human body. A diverse group of bodies have made themselves at home with Kagan designs. Among the famous names who commissioned and collected his designs are Marilyn Monroe, Gary Cooper, Andy Warhol, David Lynch, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, and firms such as Gucci and Giorgio Armani. His work is in numerous museum collections, including those of the Victoria & Albert and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Because of its idiosyncrasy, Kagans work did not lend itself to mass-production. Kagan never signed on with any of the major furniture-making corporations, and examples of his designs are relatively rare. Rare Vintage Mid Century Modern VLADIMIR KAGAN. Acrylic Lucite Love Seat or Settee. Offered is a Mid Century Modern Lucite love seat or settee by Vladimir Kagan. This true vintage decorator piece hails from the 1960’s-1970s. The upholstery, in a bright impressionist art color palette, provides a striking contrast to the Lucite, while complimenting it nicely. Included are two matching throw pillows! Designed by Kagan for Weiman and Warren Lloyd, this piece boasts large slabs of Lucite on either side, which forms arms that fluidly curve downward transcending into sturdy legs. The Lucite is fast. Ened with large round flat brass toned, modernist hardware that adds superb interest. Approximate Dimensions of Love Seat/Settee. 39-5/8 Wide (Across the Front). 32 Deep (From the Back of the Arm to the Front of the Cushion). 30 High (From Top of the Back to Floor). 13-1/4 High (From Seat to Floor without Bottom Cushion). 17-1/4 High (From Seat to Floor with the Bottom Cushion). Upholstery is in good vintage condition. You may clean it if you like or easily change it to a fabric of your choosing. Much of this could possibly be carefully buffed out if you desire! The brass hardware has some wear, tarnish and patina, also commensurate with age and use, that could be cleaned/polished. This is a fabulous mid century coffee table made in Italy. (Kagan style) The structure is sound and good. The tile is great and grouting seems to be all there. Some minor wear, surface gloss has some wear, gloss is worn off in some place from use and a couple small chips and one tile looks to be repaired. The blue and lighter blue tiles all have some crazing. Check out the pictures! Came from an estate sale, so had been stored away for many years in a barn. There looks to be a signature (picture) on the bottom. The wood is in great shape with no stains etc. 73″ long 21″ wide 13 1/2 high.
