A V ERY RARE PIECE OF ABINGDON POTTERY. #499 Trojan Warrior Roman Soldier Head Vase, most likely 1940s. Abingdon pottery has made high-quality porcelain plumbing fixtures since 1908. Between 1934 and 1950 the plumbing companys innovative solution to scarcity of building jobs was to shift about half of its output producing porcelain art wares, largely to make handsome vases. The unique aspect of Abingdons ceramics, by comparison to its competitors, was the use of very high firing kilns creating vitreous porcelain objects. Certain clays, such as those used in better plumbing fixtures, shrink about 10 to 12% in the heat and become watertight. Flower vases produced by Abingdon never leak or leave damp spots, but are markedly heavier than most other depression-era vases. Also unlike many of its Depression-era competitors, Abingdon Pottery made only high-quality display products, not dinner wares or low-cost decorative curios. Abingdons single-fired vases not only remain physically robust today but their designs tend toward linear shapes with rich solid glaze colors. This particular head vase is very rare and is in the desirable white or ivory color. Its Art Deco style is timeless! Measuring at the widest points, the vase is 7 tall and wide. It is 2 1/4 deep. Condition is excellent, it has fine crazing throughout. Please review the last four photos. The red arrows are pointing to any marks on the vase. There are two minor flicks on each bottom corner and there are two tiny dark spots on the side glaze. In the last photo, the arrow is pointing to a crazing line.
