This is a rare and large work by an artist who’s prices have soared in recent years, as the art world has come to fully recognize his artistic genius and historical significance. Please check my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks! Herbert Kornfeld (1915 – 2001). Was an American School painter whose prolific career spanned eight decades (painting until his death in 2001) and helped forge a new style referred to by art critics as California Modernism. A landscape painter-who considered the outdoors his studio and executed series around the country and the world- capturing the beauty of the California coast was a lifelong passion for the Los Angeles, Calif. With a particular affinity for water, beaches, fishermen, boats, barns and sunsets, Kornfeld painted extensively over the years, from San Francisco and Mendocino in the north to Los Angeles and San Diego in the south. And on Catalina Island. He also captured a myriad of other iconic California images, including the Watts Towers; the Santa Monica Pier carousel; Downtown L. S Angel’s Flight Railway; Rodeo Drive; the Morro Bay dock (which no longer exists); as well as oil derricks and other industrial scenes. Kornfeld left behind an expansive library of oil paintings. Including when he tired of the limits of a flat canvas, three-dimensional, multi-surface works he called triptychs-as well as hundreds of acrylics, sketches, cartoons, and watercolors. His works have been displayed in museums and galleries across the United States and in Europe. And his graphics have been published by the New York Graphic Society and Aaron Brothers. Born and raised in Great Falls, Mont. Following a stint in the Navy in WWII-where he painted mines with camouflage, amused fellow recruits with Armed Forces themed cartoons and was a “right-hand man” to Admiral Chester Nimitz, according to his widow-a 21-year-old Kornfeld moved to Los Angeles where he studied at Pasadena’s Art Center and, later, went on to train at the prestigious Chouinard School of Art with Palmer Schoppe, who became a lifelong friend. When Kornfeld was introduced to Walt Disney, the cultural icon took the talented young man under his wing, helping him to hone his skills as an illustrator and animator in the late’30s working on Donald Duck (who debuted in 1934) and such classics as Fantasia (1940). Although he worked as an artist at most of the major studios, including MGM, Warner Bros. And Columbia (also appearing in numerous films as an extra), Kornfeld soon realized there was more to life than “The Duck” and took to the road to pursue his career as a fine artist and to lead a decidedly bohemian lifestyle. He began journeying up and down the California coast, throughout the U. And, around the world to paint in such locales as Canada, China, England, France, Greece, Sweden, and Mexico. His paintings were “happenings, ” says Sam Kornfeld. With 27 pieces of luggage in tow, she recalls, they would settle into a community, living there for months to extract its spirit and flavor, producing 25- 30 paintings in each environment. Such sojourns were frequently themed, such as his English series, which followed the Thames River from its mouth to its source. When Kornfeld declared the series complete, the couple would vacation for several weeks (while the oils dried fully), then he would remove the canvases from their stretchers, roll them tightly, place them in a repurposed oxygen tank for safe keeping and roll them onto the plane home, never allowing them out of his sight. Establishing his own, uniquely modernist aesthetic, Kornfeld became well known for his loose, flat brushstrokes- transforming simple boats and other landmarks into geometric, cubist forms-and his bold and interpretative use of color. Early in his painting career, he began producing his own pigments to attain some of the unique colors and hues that became one of his calling cards. “He saw color differently, ” Sam says of his hand-crafted paints. As colorful as his paintings, the redheaded artist-who had a true joie de vivre-always painted in a hat and ascot. Even while shirtless during summer months. While traveling with Circus Vargas, he performed as a clown in the show, visiting 360 cities and capturing the highs and lows of circus life on his canvases. While living on Catalina Island off the southern California coast, his wife decided to dress as a mermaid for Halloween, for which he promptly volunteered to do her make- up and fished real seaweed out of the harbor to embellish the costume. “I stunk to high heaven, ” Sam Kornfeld laughs. A true renaissance man and raconteur who loved surrounding himself with people and frequently attracted other talent-Both K. Lang and Melissa Etheridge were each tenants for a time in the couple’s Hollywood Hills guest house near the heart of historic Hollywood-Kornfeld was also a writer, dabbled in woodworking and lifestyle design for home décor, invented board games and was an amateur magician. Together for many years and married for 10, recalls Sam, “We had an ongoing love affair until the day he died, ” in a house on Solimar Beach located on the California coast near Santa Barbara. Where he painted his final sunset. Herb Kornfeld was as colorful as the pictures he painted. Born and raised in Great Falls, Montana, he painted form at an early age. He was apprenticed to Charlie Russell (who died before lessons began). Herb said, Lucky break for me- I’d have been a washout as a cowboy artist- never knew a hoof from a halter. Herb was self-taught as a painter, art center taught as an ad-man, Disney taught as a cartoonist, and a navy artist in WWII. A seasoned traveler, Kornfeld journeyed to China, Sweden, France, Greece, England, Mexico, Canada and throughout the United States, painting in remote as well as accessible villages and cities. For months on end, he settled into a community to extract its spirit and flavor. These sojourns have included a trip to England, following the Thames River from its mouth to its source and months spent traveling with a well-known circus in Canada where he captured on his canvases the highs and lows of circus life. Well over a thousand oils have found their way around the globe; not to mention watercolors, drawings, and cartoons Disney, MGM, Warner Bros. Graphics have been published by the New York Graphic Society, Aaron Brothers and others. Exhibitions of his work have been held everywhere and his painting has been done throughout the world. Herb felt the only place to paint a landscape was to be in the landscape itself, not in the studio. The California coast was an ongoing passion for Kornfeld, which he painted extensively over the years. Even though Herb left this world a decade ago, his fantastic work lives on in private and public collections throughout the world. Just when I think I have painted every inch of the California coast, I find some exciting inch I’ve missed. Those who have selected a Kornfeld painting in the past have come from all walks of life- from wealthy large collectors to individuals whose personal possessions include but one painting. You are invited to see this show and possibly collect one of Herb Kornfeld’s important paintings. American Academy of Arts- Easton, Maryland. This is an amazingly well done and exceptionally RARE Antique Mid Century Modern Brazilian Doberman Dog Oil Painting Portrait by famous Brazilian-Californian Mid Century painter Ozz França 1928 – 1991. França was a former Disney animation artist who’s projects included “Lady & the Tramp” and 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. He is mostly known for his Mid Century Abstract Expressionist style, portraits of Big-Eyed children and later, his ethereal Native American portraits. This is an early work by the artist, and completely unique from his usual style of subject matter. If you are collector of this artist, this is a rare jewel that is not to be missed. França was collected by many wealthy socialites and celebrities during the 1960’s, and this particular painting came from the old estate of an affluent family in the Hollywood Hills. The family were personal friends of the artist, and commissioned França to paint a photorealistic portrait of their three prized pure-bred Dobermans. This work hung over their fireplace in their living room, where they often drank and socialized with Ozz França. The painting depicts three beautiful Dobermans, with charming yet noble expressions. The dog’s names are written under each portrait, and read from left to right: Mr. Scratch, Babe & Tina. I was told that these purebred Dobermans sired many puppies, and that their descendants now number in the hundreds. Perhaps you have one of these dogs?? This would be a very cool thing! Signed “França 60″ in the upper right corner. Good condition, with some minor paint loss to one corner of the painting. This work fits loosely in the frame, and would require a few nails to securely fasten the canvas to the original 60’s frame. Approximately 29 1/4 x 35 1/4 inches including frame. Actual artwork is approximately 24 x 30 inches. Please check my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks! Oswaldo Franca (pronounced FRON-suh) known as Ozz Franca in the art world was born 2 Oct 1928 in Sarapui, Brazil, but grew up in Sao Paulo. From an early age he showed talent as an artist. At the age of 14 he won first prize at the annual Spring Salon Art Competition in Sao Paulo. From there he went on to win prizes all over Brazil. He held his first one man show at the age of 18. He graduated from the Fine Arts School in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1949. He decided to devote his life to art. Franca arrived in the U. On 1 Sep 1952 to accept a scholarship at the University of Utah. A year later he moved to Hollywood and began doing movie illustration for Walt Disney. He was proud that he was the first Brazilian artist to work as a cartoonist with Walt Disney. Some of his projects included’Lady and the Tramp’ and’20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’. Franca painted many subjects, but he is best known for his esoteric images of Native American women. He sometimes worked from black and white photographs provided by is daughter. He would then complete the painting with a color scheme of his own choosing. He also painted many movie stars. The winner of numerous awards, including honors from the city of Los Angeles for his cultural contributions. Franca resided in a California desert community that afforded him the appreciaton and silence that allowed his creativity to flourish. After creating a spectacular body of art, Franca died in 1991 in Riverside, Calif. \uD83D\uDD25 RARE Antique Mid Century Modern Impressionist Enamel Copper Painting, Rouault
This is an vey RARE Antique Mid Century Modern Impressionist Enamel Painting on copper, after famed French modernist painter Georges Rouault. This work is from a very limited series of enamel paintings produced after the artist, with examples painted on both copper and steel. Rouault also experimented with enamel painting, and it was a medium he was fond of. This work depicts three of Rouault’s characteristic clowns in the midst of conversation. The colors of this work are vibrant and rich, and this is clearly a masterfully created piece. This work is unsigned, but the backing paper is missing, which may have had more information on this piece. A stamp on the frame reads: Made in Germany. Approximately 7 3/8 inches tall x 7 3/8 inches wide including frame. Acquired from an affluent estate in Pasadena, California. 1871 – Paris, France. 1958 – Paris, France. Figure, genre and still life painting. Georges Henri Rouault (27 May 1871 – 13 February 1958) was a French Fauvist and Expressionist painter, and printmaker in lithography and etching. Rouault was born in Paris into a poor family. His mother encouraged his love for the arts, and in 1885 the fourteen-year-old Rouault embarked on an apprenticeship as a glass painter and restorer, which lasted until 1890. This early experience as a glass painter has been suggested as a likely source of the heavy black contouring and glowing colors, likened to leaded glass, which characterize Rouault’s mature painting style. During his apprenticeship, he also attended evening classes at the School of Fine Arts, and in 1891, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts, the official art school of France. There he studied under Gustave Moreau and became his favorite student. Rouault’s earliest works show a symbolism in the use of colour that probably reflects Moreau’s influence, and when Moreau died in 1898, Rouault was nominated as the curator of the Moreau Museum in Paris. Georges Rouault also met Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet, Henri Manguin, and Charles Camoin. These friendships brought him to the movement of Fauvism, the leader of which was considered to be Matisse. From 1895 on, he took part in major public exhibitions, notably the Salon d’Automne (which he helped to found), where paintings with religious subjects, landscapes and still lifes were shown. In 1905 he exhibited his paintings at the Salon d’Automne with the other Fauvists. While Matisse represented the reflective and rationalized aspects in the group, Rouault embodied a more spontaneous and instinctive style. His use of stark contrasts and emotionality is credited to the influence of Vincent van Gogh. His characterizations of overemphasized grotesque personalities inspired the expressionist painters. In 1907, Rouault commenced a series of paintings dedicated to courts, clowns and prostitutes. These paintings are interpreted as moral and social criticism. He became attracted to Spiritualism and the dramatic existentialism of the philosopher Jacques Maritain, who remained a close friend for the rest of his life. After that, he dedicated himself to religious subjects. Human nature was always the focus of his interest. Rouault said: A tree against the sky possesses the same interest, the same character, the same expression as the figure of a human. At the end of his life he burned 300 of his pictures (estimated to be worth today about more than half a billion francs). His reason for doing this was not profound, as he simply felt he would not live to finish them. [1] Rouault died in Paris in 1958. This item is in the category “Art\Paintings”. RARE Original Antique Mid Century Modern GOOGIE Atomic Los Angeles Sign
These are extremely cool and RARE original Southern California Antique Mid Century Modern Googie Atomic Signage Letters from an old and long defunct restaurant or business in Los Angeles, California. These signage letters date to the 1950s – 1960s, and are completely handmade and one-of-a-kind artistic objects comprised of plastic and steel. The plastic is orange, the frame for the letters are steel and they are painted red on the sides. These pieces were found in a storage unit, along with some very old restaurant equipment and Formica furniture. Googie Art and Architecture was famously invented in Southern California, and these are original pieces from the movement and the era. In regard to the big letters, there are: 1 T, 3 As or Ps, 2 C, 2 O, and 2 S. In regard to the small letters, which are made of wood, painted white, there are: 3 T, 2 As or Ps, 1 C, 2 O, 1 S and 1 R. These pieces are intact, and useable, but have various condition issues from decades of usage and storage. Some hairlines, scuff, missing or broken pieces of plastic trim, etc. It would be too tedious to give the dimensions for every letter, but the large T is approximately 28 inches wide. A photo is included with a Coca-Cola can to reference scale as well. While modern chain businesses such as Dennys and Norms still advertise their restaurants with Googie Atomic signage and architecture, the real period pieces are nearly impossible to find, and rarely survive this long. Please check my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks! What Is Googie Architecture? Googie is a futurist style of architecture that came of age in the mid-twentieth century in the United States, particularly Los Angeles and the surrounding suburbs in Southern California. Googie buildings incorporate strong geometric shapes, upswept roofs, the suggestion of motion, and a mixture of materials ranging from steel to glass to craggy boulders. Googie is a low-rise architectural style most common in designs for restaurants, car washes, bowling alleys, gas stations, drive-in theaters, apartment buildings, and occasionally single-family homes. Googie design, along with its close mid-century modern cousins Populuxe and Doo Wop, embraced the futurism of the atomic age. It conveyed optimism and a sense of progress, and many of its surviving structures are cherished architectural landmarks. A Brief History of Googie Architecture. Google architecture is largely a product of the atomic age, and it rose to prominence in the 40s and 50s. Googie architecture began in Los Angeles and developed out of Streamline Moderne, a 1930s architectural style that used bold, swooping shapes and nautical themes. As cars and airplanes eclipsed boats and trains as the most common forms of transportation, architectural styles shifted accordingly, and the Googie style emerged and took off after World War II. According to architectural historian Alan Hess, there is a dispute over which building was the first Googie design, but one candidate is a Bob’s Big Boy in the Los Angeles suburb of Burbank, designed by Wayne McAllister and built in 1949. Johnie’s Coffee Shop on L. S Miracle Mile and Norm’s Restaurant on La Cienega, were both designed by Helen Liu Fong and built around the same time. As the style developed, other pioneering Googie designers rose to prominence, included the architect John Lautner (who designed the movement’s namesake, Googie’s Coffee Shop on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood), Douglas Honnold, and Eldon Davis and Louis Armet (in business together as the Armet & Davis design firm). The 1950s were a fertile time for Googie design in Southern California, but the movement also spread throughout the nation. Prominent Googie structures were built in locales including Wildwood, New Jersey; Seattle, Washington; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Phoenix, Arizona; Miami, Florida; and the 1964 World’s Fair in New York. The space age and the atomic age arguably reached their peak with the Apollo missions of the 1960s and early 1970s, and at this point, Googie architecture began to fall out of favor. Many Googie buildings have since been torn down in the intervening years, and those that remain are now considered retro marvels worthy of preservation. 7 Characteristics of Googie Architecture. Googie architects embraced the potential of mid-twentieth century engineering, creating designs imbued with a sense of propulsion. Key Googie design elements include. Bold geometric shapes with sharp angles and sweeping curves. Boomerang shapes for pillars, roofs, and signage. Starburst images on signs and building facades. Cantilevered rooflines that appear weightless. References to space age imagery, from rockets to flying saucers. Illumination, from neon signs to glowing plastic paneling. A mixture of materials, including glass, steel, concrete, and raw boulders. The item “RARE Original Antique Mid Century Modern GOOGIE Atomic Los Angeles Sign” is in sale since Saturday, May 1, 2021.
