Rare Mid Century Nordic Modern 1948 GRETA GROSSMAN Green & Gold FLOOR LAMP
Rare Mid Century Nordic Modern 1948 GRETA MAGNUSSON-GROSSMAN Green & Gold FLOOR LAMP. Grossman’s “Grasshopper” lamp was quite famous, this lamp, known modestly as model 731, is much harder to find, and quite desirable. This lamp features golden brass base and body, and swivel brushed aluminum shades in a deep forest green. The lamp has a 3-way foot switch on the base so you can operate the first light, the second light, all on, or all off. The lamp is mostly original, though it has had a “sympathetic restoration”. The entire lamp was carefully cleaned to maintain the original patina. The paint on the shades has begun to oxidize and can be washed off if you’re not careful, so a clear coat would be advised. There are 2 cracks/breaks in the brass on the side of the base of the lamp that were glued and backed with brass sheeting for stabilization. There is also a small crack in the brass at the end of the top pole that was also glued on the inside for stabilization. The base of the lamp had something corrosive splattered on it long ago, so the worst of the corrosive spots were gently cleaned and only those spots were sealed with amber lacquer. While the lamp displays very well as-is, a full restoration of the base is likely possible as the shell of the base is solid brass, but I’ll leave that decision up to the new owner. The shade swivels were gunked and frozen in place and have been restored to be able to function correctly. The wiring running through the lamp, and the power cord, were not original and were poor condition, and have been replaced. The light sockets and foot switch were too corroded to save, so they’ve been replace with duplicate new parts, sourced from a vintage lighting supplier. The base felt was missing and has been replaced. The lamp now works well and is safe to use. Additional photos above show catalog pages and advertisements of Greta Magnusson-Grossman pieces that feature this lamp. I’ve also included screen-shots of past sales of this lamp. As you can see from those comps, this lamp has come up for sale very few times in the last 15 (or so) years, so this is a rare opportunity to get a very special piece at a very reasonable price. I could only find 2 of these lamps for sale online right now, and they’re located in a gallery in Sweden. Please see all of the pictures for additional details. Once packaged, this lamp measures 20″x 20″ x 60 and weighs 21 pounds. I know there are a few in nearby Chicago, but I’m not familiar with them. Basically, I’m willing to work with you in any way I can.
