A vintage Mid-Century Modern Italian Brutalist abstract sculpture made of metal copper, welded and in excellent condition. Wear consistent with age and use, circa 1950, Italy. Marcello Fantoni was an Italian designer and producer born in 1915 Florence, Italy and passed away in 2011. In 1927, Fantoni started his apprentice at the Institute of Art at Porta Romana, and received his masters in 1934. Fantoni opened soon his own ceramic studio, where he designed and produced unique pieces. His works were displayed in private collections and in the most important museum of the world. In 1970, he founded the International School of Ceramic Arts in Florence, Italy. Depth: 6.5 in. Mid-Century Modern (Of the Period). Wear consistent with age and use. This is a beautiful and very striking Antique Mid Century Modern clay or red stoneware sculpture, depicting a voluptuous and alluring nude African American woman. The figure’s shy, and authentic gaze and her posture suggest a model who is perhaps shy and demure, not used to modeling nude. The most unique and wonderful aspect of this sculpture is her chubby and voluptuous figure, which is perfectly accentuated and modeled in a powerful and dignified way. Truly a beauty to behold. Appears to be made from a red pottery clay, and glazed with a luminous black paint or ceramicist lacquer. This figure likely dates to the 1950’s – 1960’s, but could certainly be much older. It appears to be unsigned. I believe this may have been sculpted by someone very important. Perhaps you recognize the artist? This sculpture in many ways reminds me of the sculptures by famed Mexican artist, Botero. Approximately 5 inches at its widest point x 14 inches at its highest point. It appears to be a man carrying a hand made sledge. It measures roughly 5.5″ tall by 15.5″ long. It has some surface wear from age which is to be expected but is free of any chips or cracks. The handle of the sledge is glued in the hand of the man so there is some glue that you can see there. Please see all photos for details and feel free to ask any questions. This is indeed a superb piece by glass maker master Archimede Seguso. Spanning a wide range of forms and colors, his subject matter included animals and abstract shapes. Born in 1909 in Murano, Italy, he was part of an illustrious legacy of Italian glassmakers, their ancestry spanning over six centuries to the 14th century. Seguso notably led a revival of ancient Venetian glass-making techniques, specifically filigrana, which produced lattice-like patterns. Seguso ran the family business Seguso Vetri d’Arte, from 1937 to 1942. The artist died in 1999 in his hometown of Murano, Italy. The Seguso company continues to produce glass, with works included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
