Extremely rare glazed ceramic compote/vase. Pottery designed and produced by Malcolm Leland in 1951. Only a few of these was produced by Mr. Condition : Original vintage condition. Excellent for its age. No chips or major discolorations. Very few minor patinas on the finish that are consistent with age. Authenticity : Signed “Leland” at the base. Measurement : 9.5″ x 5.75″ diameter. Malcolm Leland was born in 1922 in Columbus, Ohio and from the start, displayed a gift for drawing and creating. He attended art school until World War II demanded his service, flying B-17s against Japan in the South Pacific. To our enduring benefit, he chose the latter, moving to El Segundo, California to found Malcolm Leland Ceramics. With little more than a potter’s wheel and a kiln, he immediately found a market for his designs in the high-end shops on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. His work was simple, clean and elegant; motifs which would drive his future artistic success throughout Southern California. The ceramic works, vessels, fountains and lantern modules that were produced during these early years set a promising course for Malcolm’s blossoming modernist reputation and became iconic examples of mid-century design and modernism movement in California. His ceramic bird shelter won the 1955 MOMA Good Design Award. Malcolm became increasingly drawn to structure, and was heavily influenced by Chicago architect Louis Sullivan. In 1957, high modernist architect Richard Nuetra invited Malcolm to create the louvered ceramic facade of the L. Thus began Malcolm’s decades-long career in architectural design, defining the facades and textural elements of many Southern California buildings and plazas. He is best known for his “Bow Wave” sculpture and fountain at San Diego Civic Plaza. This listing is for a Vintage Mid Century Modern La Cava Italian Art Pottery Figural Portrait Face Wall Sculpture / Hat or Coat Hook. It is Signed “LA CAVA ITALY” on back (photo 5). It is Matte Black in color with a Carved Design of a Female Face on front. The Face is Half White, Half Black, and has Blonde / Yellow Hair. The Wall Plate has Glossy Red, Yellow, and White Stripes. It is in excellent condition overall with no chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. Not sure if hanging wire is original, but thats how i got it. Please view the photos carefully as they are my main description. It will be securely packaged and double boxed. It measures 6 9/16″ tall x 5 9/16″ wide across wall plate, 5 1/8″ front to back, and 3 11/16″ x 3 3/16 across face. Bitossi Italy Onorevoli People Sculpture by Aldo Londi. Check out this uber rare Onorevoli sculpture by Aldo Londi for Bitossi. This Italian masterpiece is about 18″ H overall and the wood base measures about 5.125″ W x 5.875″ L x 1.5″ H. The taller figure measures 14.25″ L and the shorter figure is 8.125″ L. It is in great vintage condition, but there may have been a repair to the larger figure (see photos). The wood block has burn marks where the holes were drilled and one corner is dinged. It is missing the original paper label. This item comes from our pet-free and smoke-free home. Your satisfaction is my goal. Very Rare Bitossi Pottery Onorevoli People Sculpture, 1950s Raymor Aldo Londi
For your consideration, a very rare Bitossi pottery Onorevoli people sculpture, circa 1958-60. This is an early design from Aldo Londis Onorevoli series, the later more prevalent people sculptures are much larger in scale and less detailed. The work is in overall good condition. The larger figure has firing cracks at the neck, abrasions to the body, surface scratching to the clay at one side that resembles a crack BUT IS NOT, and a fleabite chip towards the foot at the incised line. The wood base has staining. The figures will be boxed separately and the entire sculpture double boxed. Measurements including base: 15.75 inches in height, 5.5 inches in width, and 5 inches in profile depth. This is really an exquisite piece of Mid-Century Modern Style art. She is leaning forward and resting her head on her shoulder and arm on her knee. Appears to be deep in thought. This piece is signed JARU and dated 1987 on the bottom. The color is a wonderful nude/peach that is just perfect. This piece is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks or repairs. It measures roughly 12 inches wide, 11 inches tall and about 7.5 inches in depth. I’ve searched the internet high and low and have not been able to fine another like this one. A truly rare piece! Please see all pictures as they serve as part of the description. Please note that there is a small shadowy circle in some pictures…. That is a flaw in my camera and not this piece!
