The name Gio Ponti is legendary in the annals of mid century design history. Ponti was a Leonardo da Vinci of the design world and his lamps are a rarity in the furnishings marketplace. He did a few designs for Fontana Arte for the Hotel. Ponti lamps are so rare they end up fetching sizable sums when one does hit the marketplace. Here is a one of Ponti’s rarest! Gio Ponti’s “Haughty Trumpet” lamp which was designed for the Laurel Lamp company from his studio in Milan. This lamp is aptly named! It looks like a trumpet standing on end! However unlike a normal trumpet – this one folds out and becomes a swing arm lamp of epically cool proportions! The style here is absolutely incredible and this lamp has all the facets of a mid century collector’s diamond: Epic Style, Renowned Designer and Excellent Condition! Vintage Mid Century Modern Laurel Floor Lamp with Blown Glass Diffuser Rare
This distinctive lamp stands 65.5 inches tall and has a base with a diameter of 11 inches. It is made of a variety of materials. The circular base is brass. The tube body is some sort of brushed steel with a coating of gold lacquer over it (a common manufacturing practice). This gold lacquer has been scratched away in a few locations and I have provided a few close up pictures to show those areas. This can be fixed fairly easily in the hands of an experienced technician, but it’s not terribly obvious when you’re standing back and looking at the lamp in its entirety. You need to be fairly close to the lamp to see them. There is a small pinhole dent in the tube that is positioned toward the top. Please review the pictures carefully for further details regarding condition, but on the whole I would say this lamp in very good vintage condition. The diffuser is made of hand blown glass. It drops into the tube and is held in place by threading the ball switch through a hole in the glass. There are no cracks or notable chips in the outer body of the glass. There is a “roughness” to the bottom of the diffuser where it’s completely hidden and at the hole that the ball switch is resting against the glass. It has a three-way switch that offers the option of having three different degrees of illumination provided a proper three-way bulb is inserted into the socket. I have this lamp listed as “rare” in the title simply because I have never seen another one on the internet or in an antique store. I don’t know to what degree this is true and I welcome any other examples or input regarding the origin of this lamp. Based on certain construction and style details I would speculate that this lamp is from the late 60s or early 70s. FEATURED: A very scarce Mid Century amazing double cone, dual arm table light, possibly by Stilnovo or Laurel, we believe, in gorgeous vintage condition, with rotating aluminum cones, brass plated moving arms, solid base and that fantastic look on any surface, lighting up your area with elegance and that great Mid Century style. Maker unknown, but obviously someone with a great modern design eye and great taste in home/office lighting, very Stilnovo or Laurel in looks, but during this Golden Era of Design, there were other great lighting companies producing super lights like this.. We loved the many ways the brass arms could be adjusted, as well as the aluminum cones, giving one so many different lighting effects and angles, both atmospheric as well as practical. This also has a dual off/on switch, so one side only can be on, or both at the same time, your choice of the moment. Want a cool, sleek, sophisticated wowza of a lamp, one that you will not see anywhere else, at any price? This would be it. MEASURES: Base is: 14 inches long, 6 inches wide, 1.75 inches high. Aluminum double cone shades: each are 10.5 ” long, 5″ diameter (section with light inside) and 3.25 diameter. Brass arms are 10 inches long, raise to height of 10 inches. With shades pointing out, 26 across from opening of large cone to the other opening across. Both cone shades rotate 360 degrees, and tilt straight down and can point straight up. The lights turn on/off individually as well as together. Both arms and cones are on ball jointed swivels; the arms are less flexible than the cones. Please see photos for some of the angles. Base is covered with old black felt in good condition, original working electricals in good condition also. Some age and use-related wear, minor surface scratches and age effects noted to arms; base has noted wear, scratches, missing color to brass finish, but we feel this does not detract from the overall beauty of this rare lamp. This would be strikingly elegant on a mantel as well as a desk or sideboard, and really makes a unique statement in any decor. Silvery gold look and very few marks on them for their age. One of the glass shades has 2 tiny fleabites, one on the top edge and one on bottom. They are so small, it was hard to get a good photo of them. They both work great and I will include either 2 small blue light bulbs or 2 long clear bulbs. Bubbles, lines, slight surface defects or discolorations are characteristic of all fine hand blown and hand. They are not to be considered as defects. Per the label description, and it’s age/wear, there are areas of the shade that when lit if you’re looking VERY closely you can see flecks of darkness but this is hard to photograph, though we have tried to capture it, very slight but there. Please see photos. Based on research, we believe this is model 6083 though it’s not marked as such. In wonderful working order. Minor areas of paint loss in certain areas (please see images showing it). Due to rareness of style, color and age, it’s in great vintage condition. As all sales are final.
