Rare Early 1947 Charles Lakofsky Studio Stoneware Pottery Bowl Wheel Thrown MCM
This approximately 2.5. X 7.75 handmade. Bowl is a great example of Charles Lakofsky’s award-winning studio pottery. Attractive and rare early example, with no damage whatsoever. This piece was wheel-thrown, and is glazed with a layered temmoku glaze in high gloss. Stunning Mid-Century Modern piece, perfect for any interior. Hand-painted marks include CHARLES LAKOFSKY and 1947. Made while he was still in graduate school, and before he began teaching at BGSU. Fascinating expressive and functional work. This was something I created in collaboration with the three venues that showed this exhibition: Zanesville Museum of Art, the Cleveland Artists Foundation (today called ArtNEO), and Bowling Green State University’s Art Gallery. For decades, starting about 1949, he taught art and frequently chaired the department at BGSU. The “Charlie pots” as his colleagues and admirers affectionately knew them demonstrate his finesse as a “functional potter, ” while often also embodying technical challenges overcome or sculptural elements that enlarge their appeal and success. Lakofsky won awards throughout his career, and his ceramics are found in numerous public and private collections. I’m Mark Bassett, author and collector. I frequently recommend the group Pottery Collector on Facebook. Great place for beginners and advanced collectors to mingle and learn more about art pottery and studio pottery of all sorts. As an AAPA member, I abide by their Code of Ethics. Please let me know within 3 days, if you want to return the piece.
