Mid century modern Edward Wormley for Dunbar Furniture corner cabinet bookcase or record console. Made of walnut featuring modular cubist “L” shape form with five tapered metal legs. Founded in 1910, Dunbar Furniture established a reputation for providing quality handcrafted products. The original Dunbar products were fine horse drawn buggies but with the invention of the automobile the company transformed into creating fine furnishings for the home. In 1931, Edward J. Wormley joined Dunbar as a young designer. Wormley’s knowledge of furniture history and his global perspective became key in Dunbar’s sucess over the next three decades. By the middle of the 20th century, Dunbar and Wormley had become true icons of American furniture design. The company participated in the 1950 Good Design exhibit with the Museum of Modern Art and dominated for the next three years. Dunbar and Wormley’s legacy remain today as the company continues to produce for a growing international audicence. Vintage Dunbar Furniture Chairs Tables & Cabinets remain popular worldwide. Born in rural Illinois in 1907, Edward Wormley’s interest in design originated early in life and led him to later study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Due to financial reasons, Wormley dropped out after 2 years and began his first job in an interior design studio before joining the Indiana-based Dunbar Furniture Company where he served as director of design for nearly 40 years. Following World War II, Wormley became an independent consultant branching out to design textiles, globe stands, and showrooms. He designed award winning collections for Drexel Furniture Company and was included in the Good Design shows of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Characteristic of his design elements were functional engineering, decorative laminated plywood, and unconventional upholstery. Wormley characteristically honored aesthetic qualities, following influences of Scandinavian modernism, while maintaining utilitarian qualities and “designing for the needs” of others. His work is timeless and of the highest quality. Wormley died in 1995, but his legacy is celebrated in collections including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Montreal. Excellent condition Poul Cadovius wall unit system with beautiful walnut grain veneer on particle board, and the very hard to find corner shelves. Most pieces are stamped “MADE IN DENMARK”. In addition to what you see in the first two pics, there is one more 79″ wall bracket and three more 8″ shelves included. This will give you an additional bay on either side. This set consists of the following. 5 wall brackets approx. 79 high each (only 4 shown in the pics). 1 secretary cabinet 14 3/4″ deep x 16 3/4″ high. Please note the broken loop on the key (4th pic) -it still works just fine. 2 corner shelves 8 deep. 1 corner shelf 9 1/2 deep. 4 regular 8 deep shelves (one shelf missing one hanger, third pic). 1 regular 9 1/2 deep shelf. The 2-piece corner shelves assembled are approximately 27 1/2″ x 27 1/2″, while the cabinet and regular shelves are the typical 31 1/2 length. The small metal pins under the shelves are not original, and made from metal dowel rod cut to size. Everything is in nice condition and fits together snugly. The shelves are straight, with no warping. There are minor signs of wear on the shelves and cabinet top like light scratches, and some small nicks here and there, but nothing intrusive. No separation or loose veneer. The pieces vary a little in color, but there appears to be no sun fading, and everything looks good together. It looks great as-is, though you might want to oil it, which will lessen the appearance of any scratches. Appears to have never been refinished. For local pick-up only. We have for sale this ULTRA-RARE Heywood Wakefield Corner Cupboard (#M1925) in the Heywood Wheat color. It can be found in “Heywood Wakefield Modern Furniture” by Steve Rouland & Roger Rouland. The cabinet retains its original finish. It has NOT been refinished. The unit measures approx. 34″ wide x 23 1/2″ deep x 30′ high. The cabinet has an eye-catching single sweeping curved door with one removable shelf on the interior. It displays gracefully on four conical legs. A wonderfully unusual piece. There is a single approx. 4 scratch on the left side panel of the cabinet (see the last photo) and there are also some surface scratches on the top surface toward the rear of the piece (see the last photo). There is some wear commensurate with age and usage (including on the inside lower edge of the door which is not visible when the cabinet door is closed) but, overall this highly unusual piece presents very nicely.
