RARE Vintage 70s Mid Century Modern EERO AARNIO Ball Chair, Hollywood Estate
This is an important and RARE Vintage Mid Century Modern EERO AARNIO Ball Chair, approximately dating to the 1970’s. This chair is unmarked and has clear signs of age throughout. It is NOT new or a Chinese reproduction. Approximately 47.25 inches tall x 43.31 inches wide x 38.19 inches in depth. Acquired from a small private sale at a deceased estate in Hollywood, California. Good condition for age, with light staining to the fabric, some moderate sun-fading to the cushions and interior, and some sagging to the interior lining in the upper left corner please see photos. There is mild scuffing, scratches and paint loss to the shell and base of the chair. If you look at the bottom of the base, you can see that the fiberglass has yellowed from being decades old. I have only seen this on authentic 1970’s era Eero Aarnio Ball chairs. This is a real vintage piece at half the price of a brand-new reproduction on 1stdibs. Offered is a Mid Century fiberglass/burlap shell arm chair. The design has been attributed to Luther Conover. He was part of a group of designers (Pacifica Group) which included designers Muriel Coleman and Peter Rooke-Ley… Important figures in early California Modernism. The shell has a magnificent curvaceous form presenting an exquisite profile… The special textured finish is exceptional… A process where burlap cloth was molded into layers of fiberglass. The color is a soft rich golden brown and is poised against dramatic enameled black legs… Capped with the original plastic feet!! The metal H- base design sits on thick rubber shock mounts which have a male/female design for attachment. In used vintage condition. This chair is unsigned and has no makers marks. Has some regular wear for a chair this age. Metal legs have some missing paint/ scratching. This would be a very easy restoration project. Just needs some new paint on the legs and maybe a coat of lacquer on the chair itself! Has a small chip/crack on the right side of the chair (see photos). Very rare Herman Miller/ Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman. Made of rosewood 5-ply plywood, cushions are original black leather goose down filled. Original stickers on bottom of chair see pictures. #103 is stamped into wood on seat and back of chair. This is truly one beautiful chair, one of the first chairs produced, and in very good condition other than; the shock mounts were repaired by an amateur that drilled into the wood in all four of mounts. We got an estimate from a very reputable company that specializes in repairs on Eames furniture. Ottoman in very good condition, does not swivel. This generation chair does not come along often. Additional pictures available upon request! Please note this item was revised due to new information that 1st generation chairs have 3 screws in the arms and ours has two. Also the labels date it to 1964. It is still a very rare find, with original leather and down filling, as well as the Rosewood base. , if you send me your ZIP.
