Arthur Umanoff and his Stools. Umanoff stools, particularly from the Mid Century (1950’s-1960’s) are highly sought after by collectors. I believe the spindles on this example are made out of walnut. When I found this example, it had been in storage for a number of years. I haven’t even taken the dust off of this. It did have a few small paint smudges on it that have since been removed, (bottom of pic 1) & the tiniest piece of vinyl missing on the top. Usually when I find these they are almost always cracked, this example is the most solid of this stool I’ve ever seen. Design Philosophy and Materials. Umanoff’s designs championed natural materials and sought to merge form and function. He was particularly known for his innovative use of wrought iron, often combined with wood or rattan, creating pieces like his iconic Slat Bench and various stools. His work was influenced by Scandinavian design, especially the Danish modern style.
