This is indeed a superb piece by glass maker master Archimede Seguso. Spanning a wide range of forms and colors, his subject matter included animals and abstract shapes. Born in 1909 in Murano, Italy, he was part of an illustrious legacy of Italian glassmakers, their ancestry spanning over six centuries to the 14th century. Seguso notably led a revival of ancient Venetian glass-making techniques, specifically filigrana, which produced lattice-like patterns. Seguso ran the family business Seguso Vetri d’Arte, from 1937 to 1942. The artist died in 1999 in his hometown of Murano, Italy. The Seguso company continues to produce glass, with works included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Fabulous pair of mid century modern wrought iron and glass candlesticks stand app. 12″ tall, on heavy 4″ square glass bases, with sea green sides 3/4 thick. Made and signed by the multi faceted Tony Evans in California, the candlesticks feature removable bobeches held with rubber gaskets, and Gothic wrought iron pedestals which have been gilded. While there are small chips to the heavy glass bases, there are no other damages or problems, and each base is signed “Evans” in the artist’s hand. Slightly ecclesiastical in design, and substantially made, the candlesticks will make a statement where ever they are placed, and are offered with out reserve.
