Rare and impressive pair of Mid-Century Modern large lamps designed by Paul McCobb in 1957 for the Distinguished Designer Series by the Pomona Manufacturing Company, featuring inset “Roulette” glazed ceramic tiles in the original red-orange hues. Each lamp features a triangular solid walnut body with brass toned decorative elements. The original triangular shades, restored with brand new linen, follow the lines of the lamps, giving the objects an even stronger personality, and making them truly unique conversation pieces. Other notable designers that were hired to create tiles for the series were Dorothy Liebes, Saul Bass, Paul Laszlo, Millard Sheets, Dong Kingman and George Nelson. Height listed below is to the top of the shade; height to socket is 31.5 inches. Shades height 18 inches, width 23 inches. Literature: Art & Architecture, June 1957 issue, two page Pomona Tile ad. In overall good original vintage condition. May show some signs of wear, marks, etc. Consistent with age and use. The original upholstery is in great shape and free of any rips, tears or wear. Still has the original covers for the armrest. The seat cushion is slighty discolored and would benefit from a professional cleaning. This is not to say it’s stained or heavily soiled. Completely usable as is and still looks great! The beautifully sculpted walnut frame and tall legs are in great condition with nice color and grain throughout. There are some dings and small dents on the left underside of the frame but these are on the lower portion/underside of the wood and you can’t see them when the chair is sitting as it should be. They’re easier to feel if you run your hand along the underside of the chair. The upholstery has a nubby texture to it has various colors including cream, pink, peach, blue and teal. Phenomenal table lamp attributed to Paul Mayen for Habitat, c1970’s. Polished steel column base with integrated white acrylic lantern, topped with a cylindrical white opaque lucite shade and white enameled metal diffuser. 3-way switch illuminates lower lamp, upper, and then both. Takes 5 candelabra based bulbs, not included. In very good vintage condition. Some oxidation and light wear from age and use. No damage to note. For your consideration is a rare, authentic, mid-century modern, Paul McCobb Squirm lounge chair in the original white vinyl produced by Tolex. This chair evokes the forward thinking of the 50’s with Paul McCobb’s design. Beautiful angular lines with economic shape are represented in this chair. The back is pitched at the correct angle for comfort as the concave center back divider complete a transition in two parts. The angled armrests have curving cushions that meet the clean lines of the outside chair angles. The attached seat cushion provide comfort as the rest of this chair cradles you in a relaxing lounge position. The angled corner legs give this beautiful chair a nice floating stance. Wrapped in the rarely produced white vinyl that Paul McCobb worked with “Tolex”, adding a pop of beauty to any mid century modern environment. Condition : – in good pre owned original authentic survivor condition. The legs are supportive and the frame is tight. The original springs and batting are supportive and are comfortable. The back rests are tight and supportive. The vinyl upholstery is in good shape with a couple very minor splits associated with age (see photos). The chairs come from a smoke free home. You could call Paul McCobb a man of parts. As a furniture designer, his work combined the attributes of many of his now better-known peers. Like Bauhaus designers such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer, his furniture had purity of form and line. Like the designs of Florence Knoll and George Nelson and his associates, McCobbs work was efficient and purposeful. And even like George Nakashima, he was adept at interpreting traditional forms, in particular those of chairs, for the 20th century. More than any other designer beside Russel Wright, with his ubiquitous ceramic tableware, McCobb was arguably responsible for the introduction of modern design into middle-class American households if for no other reason than that he designed the 1952 set for the original Today show. McCobb also designed cohesive lines of furnishings, such as his best-known Planner Group, that gave homes an instant look. McCobb designed for several companies, most notably Directional, the New York firm that also produced designs by other legends, such as Paul Evans and Vladimir Kagan. The signal aesthetic attribute of McCobb designs is that he completely forsook ornament his pieces have no flourishes. And yet, because they are honest the chairs, desks and tables are made of solid wood, usually maple or birch, often paired with frames and legs of wrought iron; the cabinets are traditionally scaled; the seating pieces have historic antecedents such as the Windsor chair McCobbs work has warmth and presence.
