Beautiful and rare marked Franz Hagenauer Centerpiece, fruit bowl or toffee bowl. Karl Hagenauer Obstschale Messing Hammerschlagdekor 1950. Karl Hagenauer, einen Obstschale auf 4 Beinen stehend, Messing, Hammerschlagdekor. Gemarkt, Made in Austria, Werkstätten Hagenauer Wien, Firmenstempel sowie KARL. Karl Hagenauer, a centerpiece with 4 legs, brass, hammer blow finish, marked with Made in Austria, Werkstätte Hagenauer and artist mark: KARL. Abmessung: 21 x 16 x 5,5 cm cm. Karl was an influential designer in the Art Deco style. He enrolled at the Vienna School of Applied Arts at age eleven. He studied with Josef Hoffmann and Oskar Strnad[4] and created designs for the Wiener Werkstätte art collective. After wartime service in the infantry, he resumed his training and qualified as an architect. He joined the family business in 1919 and soon took on leadership in both design and management. Karl Hagenauer was responsive to the change in public taste influenced by the popularity of the Vienna Secession. His stylized animals and whimsical creatures (reminiscent of Wiener Werkstätte designer Dagobert Peche) handcrafted in brass had broad appeal in domestic and American markets. Some were useful, such as mirrors, cigar cutters, ashtrays, cigarette stubbers – many in the form of athletes or animals, candlesticks, corkscrews, bookends, and lamp bases. Figurines, hood ornaments and other larger sculptures in wood and metal (such as the iconic Josephine Baker in the collection of the Casa Lis Art Nouveau and Art Deco Museum in Salamanca) were purely decorative. The company later expanded to produce furniture, chiefly designed by Julius Jirasek. Karl’s designs were popular enough to be reproduced and marketed by counterfeiters in the 1930s and more recently. Karl Hagenauer’s work found an avid American market partly through the efforts of New York gallery owner Rena Rosenthal, who featured the Josephine Baker sculpture in a 1935 window display. The company turned to the production of metal objects and furniture needed for the restoration of houses and other structures damaged or destroyed in the war. The 1950s saw a reintroduction to the more decorative products. Erhaltung: Sehr gut erhalten. Hagenauer Gehörtb zum Kreis von Designern und Künstlern wie: Karl Auboeck, Goldscheider, Hagenauer, Haerdtl Haerdtel, Oswald, Roland Rainer, Werkstätte, Arnulf Rainer, Franz West, Maria Lassnig, Günter Brus, Aktionismus, Schwarzkogler, Wiener. Julius August KALMAR Arne Vodder, Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Charles Ray Eames, Saarinen, Eero, Le Corbusier. Pierre Forsell, Skultuna Rare and beautiful rocking decanter polished brass
A rare and elegant decanter in beautifully patinated polished brass with stopper in rosewood and polished brass by Pierre Forsell for Skultuna, Sweden. When you touch the decanter it rocks! The original box will be included. Material: Yellow brass, rosewood Size: h 18 cm 7 1/8″ w 14,5 cm 5 3/4″ Condition: Excellent, beautifully oxidized patina. Pierre Forsell, the Swedish Brass Poet. Pierre Forsell (1925 – 2004) grew up in central Stockholm. He was trained as a silversmith and got his journeyman’s certificate in the profession in 1949. He even took a handicraft teaching degree and began teaching in silversmithing at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm when he was only 27 years old. In parallel with the teaching profession, he undertook standalone design commissions, including at Gense in Eskilstuna. There, he designed the cutlery series Piruett and the dredger Shakers. His breakthrough was on the legendary H55 exhibition in Helsingborg, where his typical and clean 1950s design attracted wide attention. He was employed at Skultuna Messingsbruk 1955 to 1986, and did much to give the brass and Skultuna a new status in the 1960 and 70s. Having previously designed most household utensils and cutlery at Gense, but got fond of the brass and gave it a tight and modern design. For over 400 years Skultuna has produced brass and sterling silver objects of the highest quality for both everyday use and for special occasions. In 1607 King Karl IX could at last implement his long held plans for a Swedish brass industry. Refining copper into brass would reduce imports of brass and increase income from exports. The King had a man sent off on the Crown’s business to find a suitable location for a brass foundry; Skultuna was selected due to the closeness to water power. Charcoal was available here as well and the copper mine at Falun was also close. Today, over four centuries later, the company still resides in the very same place in Skultuna. The first master braziers were called here from the brass foundries in Germany and the Netherlands, they also brought the technique on how to make large brass objects like chandeliers. The oldest known chandelier is in the Church of Our Lady in Enköping and is dated 1619. Introducing designers and eventually modern design. In the 15th and 16th century, the design work was part of the craftsmanship. At the end of 17th century, processes and work methods were standardized. This was the foundation of what we today call industrial design. Norrström belonged to the most recognized designers at that time and was granted many awards for his creations. Carl Hjalmar won the Gold medal at the World Expo in Paris during the year 1900 for his magnificent baptizing font. This can still be seen at the museum in Skultuna. After his studies at the Art Academy in Stockholm, Norrström went to Paris to study. He became one of many famous artists in the colony, together with well-known artists like Carl Larsson. Carl Hjalmar Norrström is recognized as one of the first and foremost Swedish designers together with Gunnar Wennerberg, Gustavsberg and Alf Wallander, Rörstrand. The Silversmith Pierre Forssell is one of the latest designers that were employed bySkultuna. He contributed with some fabulous products during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. His designs are very much characterized as Scandinavian: strict and contemporary in style. Another famous designer that has created products for Skultuna is Sigvard Bernadotte. He designed a lot of products for the dining table. The item “Pierre Forsell, Skultuna Rare and beautiful rocking decanter polished brass” is in sale since Friday, May 27, 2016.
