Rare mid century Danish modern rocking chair in the style of Fredrik Kayser
Amazing example of the mid century Danish modern movement. This rocking chair was designed in the late 50s in the style of Fredrik Kayser who did a very similar version for the Norwegian furniture maker Vatne Mobler. That version has brass accents which this lacks. Many dealers online have attributed this version to Kayser as well but I offer no guarantees at this point if he is the designer or someone else is. Apparently made of dark afromosia wood (or similar) with the seats and back in what I believe is the original Danish cord (at least the back), this chair is as comfortable as it is visually stunning. It is in very good vintage condition but not mint. It did seem to have suffered an accident earlier in life and there is a split in the wood under and at the end of one of the arms. There is a small amount of wood loss visible on the side and what appears to be some glue residue. It is still very structurally sound and not very noticeable on casual observance due to the dark wood. Other than that, there are a few scuffs, dings and occasional scratches to be expected with use and age. The underside of the runners show use but not abuse. The cord is in excellent condition with no breaks. It seems uniformly darker to me on the back than the seat so it is possible the seat was replaced at some point and simply hasn’t achieved the same age patina as the back. No way for me to say with certainty. Overall the chair looks stunning (in my opinion) and will turn heads in your home. They just don’t make them like this anymore! It measures approximately 39.5″ high x 36″ deep x 16.50 seat height. Please let me know in advance if you would like to explore that option. There are reasonable shippers in the northeast corridor. Please feel free to ask any questions to avoid disappointment later. The item “Rare mid century Danish modern rocking chair in the style of Fredrik Kayser” is in sale since Tuesday, July 31, 2018. Pierre Forsell (1925 – 2004) grew up in central Stockholm. He was trained as a silversmith and got his journeyman’s certificate in the profession in 1949. He even took a handicraft teaching degree and began teaching in silversmithing at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm when he was only 27 years old. In parallel with the teaching profession, he undertook standalone design commissions, including at Gense in Eskilstuna. There, he designed the cutlery series Piruett and the dredger Shakers. His breakthrough was on the legendary H55 exhibition in Helsingborg, where his typical and clean 1950s design attracted wide attention. He was employed at Skultuna Messingsbruk 1955 to 1986, and did much to give the brass and Skultuna a new status in the 1960 and 70s. Having previously designed most household utensils and cutlery at Gense, but got fond of the brass and gave it a tight and modern design. For over 400 years Skultuna has produced brass and sterling silver objects of the highest quality for both everyday use and for special occasions. In 1607 King Karl IX could at last implement his long held plans for a Swedish brass industry. Refining copper into brass would reduce imports of brass and increase income from exports. The King had a man sent off on the Crown’s business to find a suitable location for a brass foundry; Skultuna was selected due to the closeness to water power. Charcoal was available here as well and the copper mine at Falun was also close. Today, over four centuries later, the company still resides in the very same place in Skultuna. The first master braziers were called here from the brass foundries in Germany and the Netherlands, they also brought the technique on how to make large brass objects like chandeliers. The oldest known chandelier is in the Church of Our Lady in Enköping and is dated 1619. Introducing designers and eventually modern design. In the 15th and 16th century, the design work was part of the craftsmanship. At the end of 17th century, processes and work methods were standardized. This was the foundation of what we today call industrial design. Norrström belonged to the most recognized designers at that time and was granted many awards for his creations. Carl Hjalmar won the Gold medal at the World Expo in Paris during the year 1900 for his magnificent baptizing font. This can still be seen at the museum in Skultuna. After his studies at the Art Academy in Stockholm, Norrström went to Paris to study. He became one of many famous artists in the colony, together with well-known artists like Carl Larsson. Carl Hjalmar Norrström is recognized as one of the first and foremost Swedish designers together with Gunnar Wennerberg, Gustavsberg and Alf Wallander, Rörstrand. The Silversmith Pierre Forssell is one of the latest designers that were employed bySkultuna. He contributed with some fabulous products during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. His designs are very much characterized as Scandinavian: strict and contemporary in style. Another famous designer that has created products for Skultuna is Sigvard Bernadotte. He designed a lot of products for the dining table. The item “Pierre Forsell, Skultuna Rare and beautiful rocking decanter polished brass” is in sale since Friday, May 27, 2016.
