A wonderful large 11 3/4 low pottery bowl attributed to Edith Heath of Heath Ceramics fame. We have always been curious about this line after first seeing them in Jack Chipman’s California Pottery Scrapbook (page 211). We’ve now had a few pieces and having recently seen some of the pieces while on the Heath Sausalito tour, can state that they are indeed associated with Edith Heath, and likely from the 1950s-60s. They may possibly be production pottery instead of studio pottery, and produced outside the actual Heath facotry – but we haven’t seen conclusive info yet. Eggshell white matte glaze with brown speckling on the sides, and darker brown glaze on the top rim. (Color may look a little pinkish due to reflection) Lighter weight ceramic construction. Back glaze in mottled brown. We’ve seen pieces come in white, pink color or a light blue-green, with different vase or bowl forms. This one is quite scarce and desirable (have only seen this particular large bowl once). Would make a great addition for the serious Heath collector. Incised on bottom with “HEATH”, we have seen both marked and unmarked forms. In good condition with no cracks or chips. Do not really see any wear. About 11 3/4 inches wide, 3 inches tall. Please ask all questions before purchasing. Please look at the photos carefully – they are part of the description. We try hard to provide an accurate description and photos of the item. Set of four 111 Coupe Soup Bowl in Opaque White/Chocolate Brown. The glaze Chocolate Brown (also called “Matte Brown”) – was developed in the 1960s and remained in production until the 1990s. The 111 Soup Bowl was archived from production towards the 1980s. There is some light utensil wear and wear on the outside as pictured and as consistent with age. These rare Japanese-Style tea bowls or tea cups are multi-function and can also serve as sauce bowls. They are experimental and were only produced for a few years and are both extremely desirable and very hard to find. Heath Ceramics had a strong Japanese influence from potters like Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada, two of the premier studio potters of the 20th Century who had a strong influence on studio ceramics, including Heath pottery from the very beginnings of Edith’s career as a pioneer potter in the Mid-Century style. Two bowls feature a classic and rare periwinkle blue-glazed exterior while one features a rare prized Mustard exterior. All three cups have Heath’s earliest speckled matte glazes and Moonstone-glazed interior. They measure 2″ H x 3.5″ W and work beautifully with standard or individual Heath teapots. This was an early series of vases, covered jars and other objects designed and thrown around 1960 by Edith Heath herself. This particular vase features an engobe glaze in tan with a glazed onyx interior in dark green to black. The neck of the vase is a deep blue to green. The vase is signed with the Heath and teacup mark, which is among her earliest marks. This rare vessel is hand combed and glazed to create the feel of an earthy landscape of rolling hills and golden grasses evoking the color of California’s hillsides in Summer through early Fall. RARE EARLY HEATH CERAMICS SEA & SAND COMBED STUDIO VASE C. I have seen only one other Heath Sea & Sand studio vase in my 30 years of avid collecting. T he museum-quality v ase is o f impressive size and technique, featuring a hand-combed semi-gloss and heavily speckled Sand exterior with a rich high-gloss Sea interior. The hand-combed surface and basket f orm is reminiscent of California N ative American basketry, possibl y produced for exhibition purposes. T his piece is n ot commercial Heath Ceramics dinnerware, but is a studio vase made for exhibition. In fact, this is not a commercial f orm meant for production. This is the only example of this form a nd glaze combination I have ever encountered. The vase measures 6. 5 h igh with a 7. 5 diameter at the shoulder. The vessel is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. It is signed with the early Heath & Teacup mark. The vase exhibits an incredible amount of handwork including the deeply hand- combed exterio r. S tudio vases by Heath Ceramics are extremely rare and almost never appear on the market as most of them are already in private and museum collections.
