Rare Mid Century Modern Edward Wormley Dunbar Walnut Corner Bookcase Console 38
Mid century modern Edward Wormley for Dunbar Furniture corner cabinet bookcase or record console. Made of walnut featuring modular cubist “L” shape form with five tapered metal legs. Founded in 1910, Dunbar Furniture established a reputation for providing quality handcrafted products. The original Dunbar products were fine horse drawn buggies but with the invention of the automobile the company transformed into creating fine furnishings for the home. In 1931, Edward J. Wormley joined Dunbar as a young designer. Wormley’s knowledge of furniture history and his global perspective became key in Dunbar’s sucess over the next three decades. By the middle of the 20th century, Dunbar and Wormley had become true icons of American furniture design. The company participated in the 1950 Good Design exhibit with the Museum of Modern Art and dominated for the next three years. Dunbar and Wormley’s legacy remain today as the company continues to produce for a growing international audicence. Vintage Dunbar Furniture Chairs Tables & Cabinets remain popular worldwide. Born in rural Illinois in 1907, Edward Wormley’s interest in design originated early in life and led him to later study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Due to financial reasons, Wormley dropped out after 2 years and began his first job in an interior design studio before joining the Indiana-based Dunbar Furniture Company where he served as director of design for nearly 40 years. Following World War II, Wormley became an independent consultant branching out to design textiles, globe stands, and showrooms. He designed award winning collections for Drexel Furniture Company and was included in the Good Design shows of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Characteristic of his design elements were functional engineering, decorative laminated plywood, and unconventional upholstery. Wormley characteristically honored aesthetic qualities, following influences of Scandinavian modernism, while maintaining utilitarian qualities and “designing for the needs” of others. His work is timeless and of the highest quality. Wormley died in 1995, but his legacy is celebrated in collections including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Montreal. Good vintage condition, wear and distressing commensurate with age and use, edge / veneer wear, scuffing, light finish loss. 27″ x 27″ x 38. The sooner you pay, the sooner you get your item. I’ve owned and have been intrigued by this handsome lamp for some time, but my intrigue grew when thumbing through my “Fine Furniture of the 1950s” book and seeing it displayed on page 25 in an ad alongside a Wormley-designed sofa and his iconic model 5309 coffee table. If this lamp was chosen as an accessory to those pieces, its quality and design must be on par with them (or so goes my thinking). The body appears to be made of plaster, the exterior of which seems to have been finished in a coat of lacquer. The disc-form plinth base is made of wood. I see no signatures or marks. If you know who made this piece and would like to share information, I’d be happy to hear from you. Dimensions: 36 tall, as displayed. Body (not including wood base) measures approximately 18″ tall and is roughly 15″ wide at its widest point. Wood base measures 11 in diameter and is about an inch thick. Condition: good condition, consistent with age and use. We see no cracks or repairs, but there are some inconsequential flecks and chips here or there. The lacquer is lifting in two areas around the wriggly ridge. Shade is not included. Will need to be rewired and fitted with new hardware. Thank you for viewing our items! The upholstery is one of a kind. Could be Wormley Dunbar but there are no markings or tags. I have a mid century boomerang sofa (possibly Adrian Pearsall) with the same upholstery listed separately. The fabric (felt like material) upholstery is unbelievable. The children said their mother paid a fortune for it when they were children (60s) and NO ONE was allowed to sit in it up to her death. Ive never seen anything like it. The first picture was taken in the Long Island home. Condition is very good for its age. The legs have some wear. It measures 28 x 28 x 27 H. 19 seat to floor. Its part of an estate from Long Island, NY. The lady lost her husband in 1967 and left everything as is. She passed in March. Ill be listing more furniture in the coming days. All mid century and being from the same estate. This is a hobby. Im not an expert on anything. Feel free to ask questions… What a cool piece.
