Workshop Carl AUBOCK CHESS SET HORN Brass and Leather Vienna Austria. Ultra-rare Carl AUBOCK Chess Set! The objects came all from one collection and have been acquired directly from the workshop in the period 1960-70. All objects are in very good condition. As the objects have been intended as a collection from the beginning, the preowner got them directly from the workshop and carefully selected only objects with a very special / beautiful pattern of the horn. This offer is for an original Auböck chess set. The design dates back to the 1950s. The Auböck horn objects are all unmarked, as the material did not allow it. 100% original Carl Auböck and vintage. The material is natural horn, nickel plated brass (figures); leather (board) and wood (tray). The figures are all in pristine condition, made from dark and bright horn and nickel plated brass. They are heavy, the figures, together with the tray weigh about 3.4kg! The leather board is in very good condition with regular signs of use and age. Shows a nice patina with smaller scratches and stains. No cracks or similar flaws. The complete set is clean. The board measures 39x39cm (15.3×15.3). The figures measure from 42mm (pawns) to 94mm (king) in height. One inch is 25.4mm. The models from the Auböck horn collection are no longer in production. The small matchbox is shown for size comparison and not included. This offer is for the described object only, the objects from the group photos could be available in my other listings. A short introduction about the Werkstätte Carl Auböck. Der Wiener Maler und Designer Carl Auböck II zählt zu den bemerkenswertesten Künstlerpersönlichkeiten Österreichs. Anfang der 40er Jahre entwickelte Auböck jenen unverkennbaren Stil für Gebrauchs-gegenstände gehobenener Wohnkultur, der ihn nach Ende des Krieges im In- und Ausland berühmt machte. Den Höhepunkt bildete die Mailänder Triennale 1954, auf der Auböck vier Goldmedaillen für sein Werk erhielt. Nach seinem Tod führte sein Sohn Carl Auböck III (1924 1993), gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Justine, die Werkstätte weiter. Er hatte zuvor ein Architekturstudium in Wien und den USA absolviert, was auch in seinen an das Industrial Design anschließenden Entwürfen zum Ausdruck kommt. Neben der Tätigkeit als Meisterklasseleiter an der Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Wien seit 1977 und seinem internationalen Engagement für Architektur, Design, Produktentwicklung und Forschung, entstehen laufend neue Modelle für die Kollektion der Werkstätte. In dieser Zeit entwickelt sich der Betrieb zu einer Produktionsstätte von internationalem Rang. Auböck Design wird in den folgenden Jahrzehnten in allen Metropolen bei den ersten Adressen (Tiffany, Saks, Harrods) angeboten.
